August 19, 2024 — Health officials in Pennsylvania are warning consumers not to eat Bei Hollow Farm Raw Milk Cheddar Cheese due to a risk of food poisoning.
The farm has refused to recall the cheese, provide a list of retail outlets who sold the cheese, or cooperate with state food safety inspectors’ investigation to determine the extent of the contamination, according to the safety warning.
The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture warned consumers to immediately discard Bei Hollow Farm Raw Milk Cheddar Cheese (aged 60 days) after routine tests on two retail packages that were purchased by health officials confirmed that the cheese was contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.
No reported illnesses were linked to the cheese, but it can take up to two months for symptoms of a Listeria infection to appear.
The illness can cause symptoms including fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea. Listeriosis mainly affects pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and adults with impaired immune systems.
“Listeriosis in pregnant women can result in miscarriage, premature delivery, serious infection of the newborn, or stillbirth,” according to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.
