Bard PowerPort Lawsuit Filed in Missouri
In May 2023, a lawsuit was filed by Vincent A., a man from Missouri who was implanted with a Bard PowerPort in March 2020 for the treatment of cancer. In December 2021, he was hospitalized with an infection and needed surgery to remove the PowerPort.
The Bard PowerPort Lawsuit was filed against C.R. Bard and BD (Beckton, Dickinson and Company) on May 9, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri – Case Number 4:23-cv-316.
What is the Bard PowerPort?
The Bard PowerPort is an implanted port catheter that makes it easier to deliver IV medications or fluids directly into a patient’s bloodstream. For example, it is commonly implanted in patients with cancer who must undergo routine IV infusions of chemotherapy, as well as routine blood draws.
How Does It Work?
The device is also known as the “Bard PowerPort ClearVue Implantable Port.” It belongs to a class of implantable medical ports known as Totally Implantable Venous Access Devices (TIVADs).
The Bard PowerPort system consists of two primary components: an injection port that is implanted completely under the skin (where the needle is inserted) and a long flexible tube called a catheter that carries medication or fluids to a large blood vessel.
What is the Problem?
The Bard PowerPort catheter is made of a material called Chronoflex AL, which is actually a combination of polyurethane (plastic) and barium sulfate (a material that can be seen on X-rays).
According to federal judges, lawsuits claim that “defendants manufacture the catheter component of their port devices with a concentration of barium sulfate that is too high, which reduces the material integrity of the catheter, and can lead to injuries, including infection, fracture of the catheter, migration of the catheter, and thrombosis.”

About Class Actions

Instead of a class action, Bard PowerPort Lawsuits have been centralized into a Multi-District Litigation (MDL No. 3081). These lawsuits are centralized in the Bard PowerPort MDL No. 3081, which is located in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona under the Honorable David G. Campbell.
