Baraka Black Pepper Recall

In June 2024, UBC Food Distributors, of Dearborn, Michigan, announced a voluntary recall for certain containers of Baraka® Ground Black Pepper spice that may contain Salmonella.

What Happened?

No illnesses were reported, but health officials discovered the Salmonella contamination based on a routine state surveillance sample collected by the New York Department of Agriculture and Markets.

How To Identify Recalled Black Pepper Spice

The recall involves 7-once clear plastic containers with UPC Code 8 22514 26626 6. The packages are marked with an expiration date of January 2026 on the back of the label. The label is also marked with “Packed for UBC Food Distributors, Dearborn, MI” and the company website www.barakaproducts.com.

What is the Risk?

Most people with Salmonella infection develop diarrhea (may be bloody), fever, and stomach cramps. Some people also have nausea, vomiting, or headache. The symptoms usually start within 6 hours to 6 days after infection.

Should I Call a Doctor?

Call the doctor if you have:

  • Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102°F
  • Diarrhea for more than 3 days that is not improving
