How Did Benzene Get Into My Sunscreen?
Benzene is not an ingredient that is added to Banana Boat Sunscreen because it is so toxic. Instead, “unexpected levels of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can,” according to the manufacturer, Edgewell Personal Care Company.

What is Benzene?
Benzene is a toxic chemical that can be absorbed through the skin and inhaled. It is a known human carcinogen (cancer-causing chemical) that poses health risks, even at low levels.
Benzene is known to harm the bone marrow. Long-term exposure to benzene can lead to blood cancers (such as leukemia), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
“Benzene causes harmful effects on the bone marrow and can cause a decrease in red blood cells, leading to anemia. It can also cause excessive bleeding and can affect the immune system, increasing the chance for infection.”
