Safety Officials Warn Parents After Baby Dies in Sit ‘N Stand Stroller

In February 2023, safety officials warned parents that the detachable front canopy on Baby Trend Sit ‘N Stand Strollers poses a deadly suffocation risk.

What Happened?

Baby Trend reported the tragic death of a 14-month-old child who got their neck trapped in the space between the front of the canopy tube and the arm rest of a Baby Trend Sit N’ Stand Double Stroller. The father was nearby, but unable to see the child.

Another near-death incident was reported involving a 17-month-old child who suffered neck bruises after becoming trapped between the pivoting front canopy and the back of the front seat.

How Can Babies Suffocate in Sit ‘N Stand Strollers?

Babies and children can suffocate to death if they accidentally get their head or neck trapped between the pivoting front canopy and the arm rest, or seat back, of Baby Trend’s Sit N’ Stand Double and Ultra strollers with model numbers beginning with “SS76” or “SS66”.

The U.S. Consumer Safety Commission (CPSC) warned parents:

“The space in front of and behind the strollers’ pivoting front canopy can entrap a child’s head or neck if a non-occupant child climbs on the exterior of the stroller, or when a child in the front seat of the stroller is not securely restrained in the seat using all five points of the harness. Entrapment could lead to a loss of consciousness, serious injury, or death.”

Where Were Sit ‘N Stand Strollers Sold?

These strollers have been sold since 2009 in the U.S. at major stores like Target, Walmart, Kohl’s, Buy Buy Baby, Amazon.com, and more.

Was My Stroller Recalled?

Baby Trend did NOT announced a recall for the Sit ‘N Stand Strollers. Instead, the company is asking consumers to remove the pivoting front canopy when it is not in use, never allow children to play on the stroller, and always secure children in the stroller’s 5-point harness.

What is the Risk?

  • Bruises to head or neck
  • Entrapment
  • Suffocation
  • Strangulation
  • Asphyxia
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Permanent brain damage
  • Death
