July 19, 2023 — A jury in California awarded nearly $19 million to a 24-year-old man who developed mesothelioma after being exposed to Johnson’s Baby Powder as a child.
The plaintiff, Emory V., is a terminally ill 24-year-old man who was diagnosed with an aggressive form of mesothelioma in 2022.
During the 6-week-trial in California, lawyers showed the jury photos of him as a child alongside bottles of Johnson’s Baby Powder. He claims that his mother used the product on him as a child.
Lawyers claimed that the talcum powder in Johnson’s Baby Powder was contaminated with asbestos, and Johnson & Johnson knew about the risk for years, but concealed that information from the public.
The jury found Johnson & Johnson to be 100% responsible for causing him to develop mesothelioma, awarding $18.8 million in compensation for his pain and suffering, medical expenses, and more.
Three months ago, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson filed for bankruptcy and offered to pay $8.9 billion to settle around 38,000 lawsuits filed by people who developed cancer after using talc.
