Fisher-Price Baby Glider Recall
In June 2021, Fisher-Price recalled the 4-in-1 Rock ‘n Glide Soother and asked customers to immediately stop putting infants in the sleepers due to a serious risk of asphyxiation, suffocation, and death.
What is the Problem?
The recalled Fisher-Price baby gliders belong to a group of baby products known as inclined sleepers, which are designed to prop the baby’s head up as a way to prevent acid-reflux.
Inclined Sleepers Linked to 100 Baby Deaths
Unfortunately, inclined sleepers can be deadly. More than 100 babies have died and thousands of other babies have been injured or nearly died when they rolled over, became trapped, or suffocated.
Babies can suffocate in inclined sleepers if they roll over from their back to their stomach and end up face-down with their mouth pressed into the fabric. Babies can also suffocate due to “positional asphyxia,” which is when the incline forces the baby’s chin down to their chest and compresses their airway.
Recalled Baby Gliders Linked to 4 Baby Deaths
Tragically, Fisher-Price’s recalled baby gliders were linked to the deaths of four young infants between April 2019 and February 2020, including a 4-month-old from Missouri, a 2-month-old from Nevada, a 2-month-old from Michigan, and an 11-week old from Colorado.
What Baby Gliders Were Recalled?
The recall involves around 120,000 Fisher-Price 4-in-1 Rock ‘n Glide Soothers with model numbers CHP56, CHP55 and CBT81. They were sold from January 2014 through December 2020 for about $108.
The recall also involves about 55,000 2-in-1 Soothe ‘n Play Gliders with model numbers GDD28, GDD39, GDD41, GGW85, GNX43, GVG43, HBD26 and HBD27. They were sold from November 2018 through May 2021 for about $125.
Both of these popular baby gliders contain an electronic-powered seat and a rocker that moves in a head-to-toe or side-to-side motion. The recalled baby gliders were sold nationwide in the U.S. and Canada at major stores like Walmart, Target, and Amazon.com.
Safety Standards Eliminate Inclined Sleepers
In June 2021, federal regulators finally set safety standards that would “effectively eliminate” all of these dangerous inclined sleeping products from the marketplace, including gliders, rockers, swings, and bassinets.
Manufacturers Voluntarily Recall Millions of Inclined Sleep Products
Manufacturers have also voluntarily recalled millions of products in the last few years, such as the Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play Sleeper, which is another inclined sleep product that has been linked to at least 50 infant deaths due to suffocation.
