Alkaline Water Lawsuit Against Trader Joe’s

In July 2018, a judge dismissed an alkaline water lawsuit from a woman in California who claimed that Trader Joe’s advertised the water with false claims about health benefits.

What is Alkaline Water?

Alkaline water, or “hard water,” is less acidic than regular tap water. People drink alkaline water because they believe it provides health benefits by counteracting the harmful effects of acidity in the body.

Ingredients in Alkaline Water

When you buy alkaline water in the store, most brands are filtered tap water mixed with an alkalizing substance, like bicarbonate (baking soda) or other minerals like calcium, silica, potassium, or magnesium. Bottled alkaline water may also contain added electrolytes or vitamins.

Why Do People Drink Alkaline Water?

Many people drink alkaline water because they believe that it counteracts the acidifying effects of a typical North American diet. Supporters of alkaline water claim that it can neutralize acid in the blood, help the body stay hydrated, and use nutrients more effectively.

Tap Water vs. Alkaline Water

The good news about tap water in the U.S. is that it is actually quite safe to drink compared to tap water in most parts of the world. In most places, tap water has a pH of around 7, which is considered neutral.

Anything above 7 is alkaline water, with most commercially-produced bottled alkaline water products ranging between a pH of 8 or 9. For example, Real Water® is advertised to have a pH of 9.0.

Your Tap Water Might Already Be Alkaline Water

However, you may be surprised to learn that tap water in many parts of the U.S. already leans toward the alkaline side. EPA guidelines recommend that the pH of tap water should be between 6.5 and 8.5, so you might already be drinking alkaline water from the tap, depending on where you live.

Drinking Highly-Alkaline Water With pH Above 8.5

When the pH of water becomes greater than 8.5, your water might taste bitter. Drinking a lot of highly-alkalized water might also start to cause health problems, such as calcium and magnesium carbonate building up in your body, or skin that becomes dry, itchy and irritated.

Health Benefits of Alkaline Water

Many companies claim that alkaline water provides a wide range of health benefits — lowering blood sugar, preventing cancer, slowing bone loss, improving digestive health, boosting athletic performance, and even preventing diseases like cancer or heart problems. A few studies even suggest that drinking alkaline water might help people with acid reflux, high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol.

Is Alkaline Water Really Better for You Than Plain Water?

The reality is that none of these claims are well-studied by scientists. Furthermore, unless you have a serious lung or kidney disease, your kidneys should be very good at maintaining your blood at a slightly basic 7.4, even when you drink a lot of alkaline water. This means that alkaline water is unlikely to significantly change your blood pH, according to the Mayo Clinic.
