March 27, 2023 — A woman from Alabama who was burned when she opened the lid on her Instant Pot has filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer.
The plaintiff, Delia Ann M., is a woman from Bessemer, Alabama who alleges that she was injured by a “dangerously defective” Instant Pot IP-LUX80 Pressure Cooker on March 21, 2021.
According to the lawsuit, she suffered “serious and substantial burn injuries” because she was able to easily twist open the lid on her Instant Pot when it was still under pressure.
Opening the lid when there was pressure remaining inside the unit allowed “its scalding hot contents to be forcefully ejected from the pressure cooker and onto Plaintiff,” the lawsuit alleges.
Her lawsuit specifically cites advertising claims for the IP-LUX80, such as “[a]s a safety feature, until the float valve drops down the lid is locked and cannot be opened.”
This indicates that the consumer should not be able to open the lid until all of the pressure has been safely released and the unit is safe to open, according to the lawsuit.
The manufacturer, Instant Brands Inc., is accused of selling pressure cookers with a lid that can “suddenly and unexpectedly explosively separate from the unit during its normal directed use.”
The Instant Pot Lawsuit was filed on March 14, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama (Southern Division) — Case Number 2:23-cv-00321-NAD.
