Pedophiles are also frequently drawn toward authority positions in which they have access to children, but other adults are less likely to question their misconduct.

Often, sexual abuse in schools is never reported by the victims. Several academic reports have estimated that only 1 in 10 victims of sexual abuse report it to someone who can do something. Even when sexual abuse is reported, school officials and other adults may not take the accusations seriously. Many reports never result in action against the abuser. School officials may resist contacting the police regarding accusations against teachers, because they want to protect coworkers from false accusations.

Ultimately, school officials are responsible for ensuring the safety of children at school. When they ignore accusations of sexual abuse, or fail to protect children for sexual misconduct, they are failing to protect children. Several school districts have finally been forced to take action after being hit with lawsuits from the victims of abuse.

For example, parents of three girls molested in Peoria recently filed a $3 million public school sexual abuse lawsuit against an employee of the girls’ elementary school. Although multiple parents and teachers complained of inappropriate behavior, school officials did nothing but warn him to “keep his distance.” Finally, after he molested a 7 year-old girl, parents brought the lawsuit against the school district.
