NeilMed NasoGel Nasal Spray Recall
NeilMed Pharmaceuticals Inc. issued a worldwide recall for about 89,312 bottles of NasoGel Nasal Spray due to “microbial failure” which may pose a health risk.
What Happened?
NeilMed said it received 11 reports from consumers who noticed an “unpleasant odor” from NasoGel Nasal Spray. Upon further investigation, NeilMed discovered “microbial failure found routine stability testing,” and recalled three lots of NasoGel Nasal Spray.
NasoGel Infections May Cause Flu-Like Symptoms
NeilMed discovered that the nasal spray may not be sterile, and it could be contaminated with bacteria or other microbes. An infection “may lead to symptoms similar to the flu,” according to the recall from the FDA.
What is the Risk?
The microbial contamination “may lead to symptoms similar to the flu,” according to NeilMed Pharmaceuticals. People who use a non-sterile nasal spray could develop an infection, but the severity depends on what type of bacteria is growing in the bottle, and if the person has underlying risk-factors like a compromised immune system, illness, or other heath problems.
