December 5, 2024 — A lawsuit has been filed by a woman who was burned by a Maxi-Matic Pressure Cooker that she claims was defective because the safety features failed.
The lawsuit was filed by Letitia A., a woman from Ohio who was burned by a Maxi-Matic Elite Platinum 8-Quart Digital Electric Pressure Cooker (Model Number EPC-813) in January 2022.
She was using the pressure cooker at her mother’s house in Michigan to make turkey legs. She was standing just a few feet away “when the lid of the pressure cooker suddenly exploded and boiling hot contents ejected onto her face, neck, arms, shoulders, torso and right foot.”
Her burn injuries were so severe that she had to be transferred from the ER of a local hospital in Dearborn, Michigan, to the Burn Center of a hospital in Detroit for treatment and follow-up care.
Her burn injuries include severe 2nd-degree and 3rd-degree burns on her face and body, which resulted in “horrendous pain and suffering,” as well as “permanent physical scars and disfigurement in addition to significant emotional scars, from which she will never fully recover.”
Her lawsuit accuses the manufacturer of selling pressure cookers that are defective and dangerous because the lid can detach when the unit is pressurized, resulting in an explosion of food, liquid, and steam.
The defendant is the manufacturer, Pick Five Imports Inc. (doing business as Maxi-Matic USA Inc., a California corporation).
Her Maxi-Matic Pressure Cooker Lawsuit was filed on November 20, 2024 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan (Southern Division) — Case Number 2:24-cv-13076-DPH-KGA.
