July 17, 2023 — The FDA is warning consumers about an outbreak of Norovirus that is linked to raw oysters that were harvested in Nova Scotia, Canada.
The raw oysters were harvested from location NS 10 on June 9 and distributed to 17 states in the U.S. and the District of Columbia.
The states include: CA, CO, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, IN, MA, MD, MI, MN, NJ, NY, OH, PA, TX, and WI.
On June 30, health officials in Minnesota reported that 9 people in the state had been infected with Norovirus after eating these raw oysters.
Health officials are investigating whether there may be other illnesses linked to this outbreak in other states.
Infections with Norovirus are not usually life-threatening and most people get better within 1-3 days, but some people develop severe dehydration due to frequent vomiting and diarrhea.
The most common symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach pain. Other symptoms include fever, headache, and body ache.
According to the FDA, raw oysters that are contaminated with Norovirus may look, smell, and taste normal. Consumers who develop food poisoning should contact a healthcare provider and report their symptoms to the local health department.
