UPDATE: 81 Infections, 4 Deaths Linked to Recalled Eye Drops
As of May 2023, at least 4 people have died and 81 others were infected with a dangerous drug-resistant bacteria after using eye drops that were sold under the brand-names Delsam Pharma and EzriCare Artificial Tears, according to the CDC.
Delsam Pharma’s Artificial Eye Ointment Recall
In February 2023, Global Pharma Healthcare of Tamil Nadu, India, voluntarily recalled Batch No. H29 of Delsam Pharma’s Artificial Eye Ointment due to a risk of microbial contamination that could cause life-threatening infections.
The company also noted, “Additionally, some product packaging is leaking or may otherwise be compromised.”
Product Information
The recalled product is packaged in a white aluminum tube that is labeled “Delsam Pharma’s Artificial Eye Ointment” (mineral oil 15%, white petrolatum 83%, 3.5 grams / 1/8 oz.). It is used to relieve dryness of the eyes, and as a lubricant for the eyes. The NDC for this product is 72570-122-35, and its UPC code is 3 72570 012235 3.
What is the Risk?
Using contaminated eye ointment could cause serious health problems, including an eye infection that could lead to blindness, or other serious complications.
Were Any Eye Infections Reported?
No illnesses or infections were directly linked to Delsam Pharma’s Artificial Eye Ointment, but the product is manufactured by the same company that makes EzriCare Artificial Tears and Delsam Pharma’s Artificial Tears .
Those other two eye drop products are linked to a deadly outbreak of bacterial infections, including Pseudomonas infections that are highly antibiotic-resistant. As of March 15, 2023, at least 81 people in 18 states were infected with bacteria, including 4 people who died and 14 people who suffered vision loss, according to the CDC outbreak investigation.

Eye infection symptoms may include:
- Yellow, green, or clear discharge from the eye
- Eye pain or discomfort
- Redness of the eye or eyelid
- Feeling of something in your eye (foreign body sensation)
- Increased sensitivity to light
- Blurry vision
