UPDATE: Nearly 300,000 Toyota, Lexus, and Nissan Trucks Recalled for Rollaway Risk
In September 2022, nearly 300,000 Toyota, Lexus and Nissan trucks were recalled for rollaway risks:
- Toyota and Lexus: The recall from Toyota involved about 84,000 of the model-year 2022 Toyota Tundra and Lexus NX250 and NX350 compact SUVs because the parking brakes can fail, causing the vehicle to roll away. The problem is linked to a defective sensor in the electronic parking brake.
- Nissan: The recall from Nissan involves more than 200,000 Frontier and Titan pickup trucks from the 2020-2023 model-years. The trucks can roll away even when the shift lever is in park. The problem is that a part called a “parking pawl” inside the transmission may fail to engage. At least 4 injuries were reported in Nissan truck rollaway accidents
Ford Recalls 3.3 Million Vehicles for Rollaway Risk
In June 2022, Ford recalled 3.3 million vehicles in the U.S. and Canada due to a rollaway risk. The problem is that a damaged or missing part (called a “shift cable bushing”) may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear.
The car could also roll away after the driver selects the “Park” position. Ford said it was aware of 4 injuries and 6 reports of property damage related to the rollaways.
The recall involves the following vehicles:
- 2013-2019 Ford Escape
- 2013-2018 Ford C-Max
- 2013-2016 Ford Fusion
- 2013-2021 Ford Transit Connect
- 2015-2018 Ford Edge
Over 270,000 Dodge Durango, Jeep SUVs Recalled for Rollaway Risk
In June 2022, around 270,000 Dodge Durango and Jeep Cherokee SUVs were recalled due to a rollaway hazard. The recall involves vehicles from the 2018 and 2019 model-years. According to the NHTSA recall: “A malfunction in the antilock brake system (ABS) module may illuminate the brake lights and allow the vehicle to start and shift out of Park without the brake pedal being applied.”
Rollaway Accident Lawsuits
A growing number of lawsuits have been filed for injuries and deaths related to vehicle rollaway accidents. For example, one lawsuit was filed by a man in Los Angeles who sued after his wife died in a rollaway accident. He claimed that the dial gear shifter on her luxury Land Rover was defective because it was so confusing to use.
