Over 500,000 Bed Handles Recalled After 2 Deaths

In December 2021, Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare (Drive Medical) issued a recall for over 500,000 Bed Assist Handles and Bed Assist Rails or Grab Rails due to a risk of severe injury or death.

What is the Problem?

Users can get trapped and suffocate to death, according to the recall notice:

“When attached to an adult’s bed, users can become entrapped within the bed rail or between the rail and the side of the mattress. This poses a serious entrapment hazard and risk of death by asphyxiation.”

2 Deaths Linked to Bed Assist Handle Bed Rails

Two deaths were linked to Bed Assist Handles. In both cases, the bed rails were not securely attached to the bed and the person became trapped between the product and their mattress. One of the victims was a 93-year-old woman at her home in California. The other was a 92-year-old man at an assisted living facility in Canada.
