King Arthur Flour Recall

What Flour Was Recalled?

The recall involves 14,218 cases of 5-pound King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour from the following lot codes and “Best Used By” dates, which can be found under the nutrition facts:

  • BEST USED BY 12/07/19 LOT: L18A07C

What is the Problem?

King Arthur was informed by ADM Milling Co. that wheat used to make the flour was linked to an ongoing outbreak of E. coli infections.

In May 2019, ALDI grocery stores recalled all 5-lb bags of Baker’s Corner All-Purpose Flour after 17 people were infected with E. coli since December 2018. The flour was also produced by ADM Milling Co.

Raw Flour Can Contain Disease-Causing Bacteria

In 2016, at least 63 people were sickened in a separate outbreak of E. coli linked to flour. The CDC warns that flour is a raw ingredient that is not heat-treated to kill bacteria such as E. coli. These germs are killed off when a food made with flour is cooked. This is why you should never taste or eat raw dough or batter.

E. coli Food Poisoning Risks

E. coli is a bacteria that causes an illness with bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and severe abdominal cramps. While most healthy adults recover within a week, 5-10% of people with E. coli infections develop a life-threatening type of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS).
