UPDATE: Sabra Recalls 2,100 Cases of Hummus for Salmonella Risk

On March 29, 2021, Sabra Dipping Co. recalled around 2,100 cases of Sabra® Classic Hummus (10-ounce) after a routine FDA test on a tub of hummus was positive for Salmonella contamination. The recalled hummus was sold in 16 states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Indiana, Mississippi, Maine, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

Hummus Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Moby Dick House of Kabob in Maryland

An outbreak of Salmonella infections has been linked to Moby Dick House of Kabob, according to the Maryland Department of Health. People who bought hummus from restaurant locations in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., should throw it away and be vigilant for any symptoms of food poisoning.

Since September 10, there have been 9 confirmed cases reported in Maryland. The investigation is ongoing, but 8 out of 9 people who got sick said they ate hummus from Moby Dick House of Kabob.

2019 Tahini Salmonella Recall

May 2019 — State and federal health officials are investigating an outbreak of Salmonella Concord illnesses linked to “Karawan Tahini and Halva” tahini that was imported from Palestine, Israel.

Karawan® tahini tested positive for Salmonella, according to the New York City Department of Health.

On May 16, Broddzenatti Holding LLC of Jupiter, Florida announced a recall for retail and bulk Karawan Tahini, sold in 16-ounce jars and 39-pound buckets. The tahini was imported from Palestine from December 2018 through January 2019.

The tahini may be labelled as  “Karawan Tahini” or “El Karawan Tahini.” It was sold in bulk to retailers and restaurants. It was also sold in smaller sizes to consumers at retail stores and online. It may have also been used in other food products sold to consumers.

2018 Tahini Salmonella Recall

November 27, 2018 — Achdut LTD. of Ariel, Israel, announced a recall for 5 brands of tahini that were produced between April 7 and May 21, 2018 after a sample tested positive for contamination with Salmonella Concord.

The recall includes the following tahini brand-names:

  • Achdut
  • Achva
  • Baron’s
  • Pepperwood
  • S&F
  • Soom

The products include Tahini, Whole Tahini, Organic Tahini and Seasoned Tahini.

They were sold in container sizes: 15oz, 16oz, 17.6oz, 635 oz (428g, 454g, 500g, 18Kg), with Lot Numbers 18-097 to 18-141 and Expiration Dates from April 7, 2020 to May 21, 2020.

Achdut Ltd. sells some brands of tahini that do not have specific expiration dates, or the labels are written in Hebrew.

The CDC outbreak investigation has identified at least 5 sick people in the U.S. from the states of Hawaii, Michigan, and New York.

All 5 victims were infected with a strain of Salmonella that was closely genetically related to Salmonella that was found in a sample of tahini that was tested at the port of import to the U.S.

This manufacturer was placed on an FDA Import Alert, detaining additional product at the U.S. border until evidence is presented demonstrating that Salmonella is not present in the product.

All 5 people who got sick reported eating hummus that was made with tahini, either in a restaurant in the U.S. or during international travel.

What is Tahini?

Tahini is a food that is made from the ground paste of sesame seeds. Tahini can be eaten on its own or used as an ingredient in foods such as hummus, falafel, and baba ganoush.

Salmonella Food Poisoning

The Salmonella bacteria can cause serious food poisoning. In most cases, symptoms last for 4 to 7 days and resolve without needing medical attention. The symptoms can include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps that start from 12 and 72 hours after infection.
