What are Papayas?
Papayas are a large oval-shaped fruit that weighs about 3 pounds. The ripe papayas have yellow skin and the unripe papayas are green. The inner flesh of the papaya is pink or salmon-colored.
2019 Cavi® Papaya Salmonella Outbreak
June 2019 — The CDC reported another outbreak of Salmonella linked to Cavi® whole, fresh papayas imported from Mexico and distributed by Agroson’s LLC.
Since January 2019, at least 71 people in 8 states were infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Uganda, including 27 people who were hospitalized.
Illnesses were reported in the following states: Connecticut (14), Florida (1), Massachusetts (5), New Jersey (18), New York (27), Pennsylvania (4), Rhode Island (1) and Texas (1).
2017 Maradol Papaya Salmonella Outbreak
In 2017, Maradol papayas from Mexico were linked to over 250 Salmonella illnesses, including 2 deaths, according to an update from the CDC.
The CDC linked 4 separate outbreaks to 4 different farms in Mexico:
- Maradol Papayas — Salmonella Urbana — 7 illnesses in 4 states
- Maradol Papayas — Salmonella Newport — 4 illnesses in 4 states
- Maradol Papayas — Salmonella Anatum — 20 illnesses in 3 states; 1 death
- Maradol Papayas — Salmonella Thompson, Salmonella Kiambu, Salmonella Agona, and Salmonella Gaminara — 220 illnesses in 23 states; 1 death
2017 Papaya Salmonella Outbreak Investigation
The outbreak has been traced to Maradol papayas that were grown in Campeche, Mexico, and recalls have been issued for all papayas that were grown or packed on a farm called Carica de Campeche in July 2017. Other papayas from Mexico have also tested positive for Salmonella and the number of recalls may continue to expand.
Papayas from the following farms in Mexico have tested positive for Salmonella:
- Carica de Campeche in Tenabo, in the state of Campeche, Mexico
- Caraveo Produce in Tecomán, in the state of Colima, Mexico
- El Zapotanito in La Huerta, in the state of Jalisco, Mexico
The outbreak was first linked to papayas on July 17. Health officials in Maryland reported that 3 out of 10 yellow Maradol papayas from Mexico that were purchased at a grocery store in Baltimore tested positive for Salmonella.
Laboratory tests have confirmed at least 4 strains of Salmonella in the outbreak: Salmonella Thompson (131 illnesses), Salmonella Kiambu (57 illnesses), Salmonella Agona (8 illnesses), or Salmonella Gaminara (5 illnesses)
Caribeña Papaya Recall
On July 26, a Maryland-based distributor called Grande Produce issued a recall for Caribeña® Maradol papayas that were shipped between July 10 and July 19, 2017.
Cavi Papaya Recall
On August 5, Argoson’s LLC of the Bronx, New York issued a recall for Cavi® Maradol papayas. The papayas were sold in New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey until July 31, 2017. They are marked with PLU sticker: “Cavi MEXICO 4395.”
Valery Papaya Recall
On August 7, Freshtex Produce LLC issued a recall for Valery® Maradol papayas that were sold in Illinois and possibly other states from July 10 through July 13, 2017.
Salmonella Food Poisoning Symptoms
Food poisoning with Salmonella typically causes symptoms within 12 to 72 hours of eating contaminated food. The illness usually lasts about 4 to 7 days, with symptoms such as:
- Diarrhea
- Fever
- Abdominal cramps
- Loss of appetite
- Vomiting
- Headache
- Chills
