July 27, 2016 — An outbreak of E. coli in New Hampshire has sickened 14 people and more than 8,800 pounds of ground beef have been recalled.
USDA track-back investigations on 8 sick patients led back to a single day of production at PT Farm in North Haverhill, New Hampshire. The company recalled beef products made between June 6 and June 16. Illness onset dates range from June 15 to July 10, 2016.
Recalled brand-names include:
- Chestnut Farms
- PT Farms
- Miles Smith Farm
- Robie Farm
The recall includes various weights and sizes of raw intact and non-intact beef products that were packed in cardboard boxes. They have establishment number “M8868” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
The strain has been identified as E. coli O157:H7, which produces Shiga toxin and is known to cause severe, bloody diarrhea for several days. Most healthy adults recover within a week, but about 5-10% of victims develop a life-threatening type of kidney failure known as Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS).
During the summer months, millions of Americans are eating ground beef in hamburgers. Never eat undercooked ground beef — always heat it to at least 160°F or 70˚C.
One pound of ground beef can contain meat from up to 400 different cows. E. coli is commonly found in cow manure, and just one poorly-processed cow can contaminate thousands of pounds of ground beef.
