November 20, 2015 — People are still getting sick from Salmonella-tainted cucumbers nearly three months after a recall, with another 71 cases reported since mid-October.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) confirmed a total of 838 illnesses in 38 states, including 165 people who were hospitalized and four who died.
The CDC is still investigating the source of the outbreak. The agency released an epi curve showing that the worst of the outbreak is over, but an unusual number of cases continue to be reported:
“The number of reported illnesses has declined substantially since the peak of illnesses in August and September; however, it has not returned to the number of reported illnesses that we would expect to see (about 5 every month).”
Salmonella Poona has been traced to cucumbers that were imported from Mexico by Andrew & Williamson Fresh Produce and recalled on September 4. Just days after the recall, two lawsuits were filed in Minnesota by people who ate cucumbers in salad at Red Lobster and developed Salmonella.
The cucumbers are known as “slicer” or “American,” dark green, and 7-10 inches long. They were sold to major restaurant chains and in the bulk-foods section of grocery stores without individual packaging.
Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps between 12-72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts 4-7 days and most people recover without treatment. In rare cases, the infection spreads to the bloodstream and causes life-threatening complications.
