August 11, 2015 — Blue Bell Creameries has resumed ice cream production at a facility in Alabama and the first shipments are on the road.
Four months ago, Blue Bell recalled all of their products due to possible contamination with Listeria. Ten illnesses were confirmed in four states, including three people in Kansas who died. More illnesses may have never been reported because the outbreak has been ongoing since 2010.
Blue Bell posted a video of a truck carrying ice cream pulling away from a facility, and wrote on social media:
“Our trucks are on the road again…And yes, they are filled with Blue Bell Ice Cream! We’ll let you know soon when and where you can find our products in stores.”
Blue Bell is the third-largest ice cream supplier in the United States and has a loyal following, especially in its home state of Texas. Facilities in Texas and Oklahoma have not resumed production. The facility in Alabama opened first because it was smaller and needed less improvements, according to the company.
Blue Bell has made agreements with health officials in all three states to bring the ice cream back following cleaning, sanitization, rigorous new testing, and procedures to prevent future outbreaks, according to the Dallas Morning News.
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that causes gastrointestinal infections when ingested. Unfortunately, the infection can rapidly spread to the bloodstream and cause life-threatening complications — especially for people with weak immune systems.
