Tygacil (tigecycline) is an antibiotic medication that is associated with a higher risk of death than other antibiotics. Although no one knows exactly why Tygacil is associated with a lower cure-rate, it may be that inhibiting bacterial growth is simply less effective than killing bacteria directly.
Tygacil Black Box Warning
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a warning for Tygacil in 2010, after a study found that it increased patients’ risk of death by 30% compared to other antibiotics. In 2012, the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen called for a Black Box warning about the increased risk of death. What is the problem?
