September 21, 2015 — Health officials in Arizona have confirmed that a woman from Tucson died after eating cucumbers contaminated with Salmonella.
The Pima County Health Department also confirmed a total of 85 illnesses in the state — 13 more than the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported just three days ago. Six of those victims have been hospitalized.
Health officials said the woman was in a nursing home and had serious underlying health conditions that may have contributed to her illness. She was over 50 years old and fell ill in August. She died in early September around the same time the cucumbers were recalled.
A recall was issued by Andrew & Williamson Fresh Produce on September 4. The San Diego-based company imported cucumbers grown in northern Baja Mexico and distributed them all over the United States.
The CDC has confirmed 418 illnesses in 31 states, including 90 people who were hospitalized. Two deaths have also been reported — one in California and another in Texas.
The woman in California was 99 years old and her family has filed a lawsuit, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Lawsuits have also been filed on behalf of several people who fell ill after eating cucumbers in salads from Red Lobster restaurants. The cucumbers were also sold unlabeled in the bulk section at major grocery stores, including Walmart, Savemart, Food-4-Less, Winco, Ralph’s, and more.
